Flash: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Hybrid, Criticism

DASH Literary Journal is based out of California State University, Fullerton’s (CSUF) English Department and is an entirely student-run journal. They’re seeking poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, micro literary criticism, and hybrid texts with an emphasis on brevity. Submissions are restricted to 2,000 words.

My two cents: Their tagline is We communicate more with less, and while I haven’t sent them anything yet, I intend to. You know how sometimes you meet someone and take an instant liking to them? That would be DASH for me. There is something scrappy about them that I like. Maybe it’s their graphics?

This Very Breath currently publishes online only, but they have plans to publish a short anthology of the best flash fiction and nonfiction writing. They’re looking for emotionally engaging flash of no more than 750 words, stories with “a few twists…engaging metaphors and stunning descriptions.”

My two cents: I’m not crazy about journals that charge for submissions and pay nothing. I don’t mind paying a little, most of these journals are living paycheck-to-paycheck as it were, but at the very least, if you’re accepted for publication into a print journal you wind up with a hard copy that usually would have cost more than you spent to submit.
